Graduate Students:

We are recruiting PhD student(s) for Fall 2025. Our projects utilize a combination of wearable sensors (EMG and movement), machine learning, mechatronics, and/or musculoskeletal modeling and simulation with applications to balance, gait, and rehabilitation. Experience in any of those areas is a plus; initiative, curiosity, and willingness to fail are even better. You can explore our website and papers to learn more about what we do!

Ph.D. applications are due in December 5 to begin the program in August. Further information on the application process for Mechanical Engineering (preferred) can be found here. We also recruit from the Biomedical Engineering program, whose application process can be found here.

We also support M.S. students interested in gaining unpaid research experience for course credits. M.S. students from Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Applied Physiology & Kinesiology, and other departments are welcome.

Undergraduate Students

We seek highly motivated, curious, independent, and dedicated undergraduate students to join our lab. Prior research is not required nor are you expected to have completed any specific classes. We are looking for students who are interested in learning, are self-driven and okay with not being told what to do each day, are not afraid of failure (failure happens a lot in life, including in research!), and are persistent in the face of challenges.

Except in very rare cases, undergraduate student researchers are expected to commit 10 hours per week for at least two semesters. This work is typically unpaid, however, some students will choose to do undergraduate research for course credit (with or without an honors thesis) and/or will apply for funding through programs such as the University Scholars program.

We typically accept new undergraduate students into our lab during the Fall and Spring semesters. Interviews are typically conducted at the end of the semester (i.e., in December for students who will start in the Spring, in April for students who will start in the summer or fall). To express interest in joining the lab, please contact Dr. Allen directly via e-mail. In your e-mail, please include (1) your major, (2) your expected graduation date, (3) a brief statement explaining why you are interested in biomechanics/neuromechanics research, and (4) a copy of your resume attached as a PDF.
